6 Months on Instagram: My Experience So Far

I’ve recently celebrated my six month Instagram anniversary and I must admit, I’m a huge fan. Six months ago, I honestly had no idea what to expect. My goal was a fairly humble one: to create something new every day. That was it. I wanted to participate in this creative community that I’d observed from the outside for so long (even though I felt completely out of my depth). Growing up, I always put myself in the “academic” box, and never stopped to consider that I could be creative too. Starting this Instagram account was a way for me to explore this whole other side of who I am and what I love, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. To be honest, I never really expected anyone to actually SEE my account: the idea of “growing a following” seemed entirely out of my reach (my Instagram knowledge was Lvl. 1 at best).

Fast forward six months, and Instagram has been sooooooo much more than I ever expected. Every now and then, I’ll hear someone talking about Instagram in a negative way, as if it’s something dangerous, but that really hasn’t been my experience at all. I saw this post the other day by the lovely @roxlajeunesse and I can’t stop thinking about it:

Instagram is much more than pretty feeds and pictures that fit well together. It’s magical places, and creation, it’s meeting incredible people and most of all, it’s moments you can never forget. Instagram is a wonderful platform to share our daily joys and to inspire one another. If somehow it should become something else for you, something negative and something that makes you feel anything other than good, I urge you to look at the way you use the platform, it’ll make all the difference.

For me, Instagram is first and foremost a creative community – and an incredibly encouraging and supportive one at that. I’ve met so many amazing people (both here in New Zealand and all over the world) that I really am grateful for. The sense of connection I’ve found here has been one of the loveliest parts of this journey so far. More than that, Instagram is easily my number one source of inspiration for all areas of life: I’ve discovered so many beautiful accounts that genuinely inspire me every day. There is so much goodness out there!!

Being committed to creating something new every day has definitely been a challenge from day one, but an incredibly rewarding one. It might sound silly, but I’ve actually learned a lot about myself and my own style: what I like, what I don’t like, what catches my eye, etc. It’s also allowed me to develop my styling and photography skills so much in such a short time and, although I’m definitely still learning, it’s led to some amazing opportunities already. It’s so exciting to be invited to collaborate with brands I truly love (and think you might love too), and definitely not something I expected six months ago. I’ve also begun to get work as a product stylist, creating content for brands to use on their own websites and social media pages, which I still can’t quite believe. Did I mention that this experience has been more than I expected?? 😅

I absolutely love being a part of this Instagram community (in case you couldn’t tell), and am sooooooo grateful for everyone that’s followed along and made this experience such a good one. So thank you! Here’s to the next six months! 💕💕

P.S. Thank you so much to everyone who entered my six month giveaway (pictured above). For all those asking, I’ve linked the items included over on my SHOP page.
